Welcome to BoxerAdvice.com, a website dedicated to boxer training, raising, and caretaking specifically for the boxer breed. Owning three boxer dogs myself I know how difficult our bundles of love can get. This is why I decided to help out other boxer dog owners with their problems, especially those that got their very first boxer dog.

Boxer dogs are very playful, affectionate, and loyal. Although they may look intimidating they are actually softies and wouldn’t hurt a fly. Boxer dogs have a distinctive personality and even each boxer dog themself have various attributes which makes training a bit more difficult to put in a “system”. However, you need to learn the general principles and you will be able to tackle any problem your boxer puppy throws at you. With that said, let’s go over some of the most basic problems you will come across with your boxer dog.

Boxer Training – Housebreaking a Boxer – This is the first problem many owners run into. Is your boxer puppy peeing inside the house destroying rugs and carpets? You need to take special care to housebreaking your little pooch. There are simple yet effective rules you need to follow to properly house train your boxer puppy. Learn how to properly housebreak your boxer puppy.

Crates can be of great use when potty training your boxer.

Boxer Training – Socializing a Boxer – To keep your boxer not only physically but also mentally healthy you need to socialize them properly. Lack of socialization can make your puppy afraid of people, other animals, or strange objects. They will feel intimidated when an “unknown” person or object gets close which is why they bark outside the window at people, dogs, squirrels, cars, etc. Learn how to properly socialize your boxer puppy to avoid potential problems in the future.

Socialize your puppy to get them comfortable around humans, animals, and "strange objects" like cars.

Boxer Training – Feeding a Boxer – After adopting a boxer your puppy will be begging for food all the time. However, you should not feed your puppy whenever he asks for it. Set up a routine so that your boxer can get used to it. Overweight dogs are just as prone to diseases as humans are so watch out and don’t ever overfeed your dog. Learn what type of food to feed your puppy and how often to feed your puppy.

Set up feeding routines and no matter what, don't feed when they beg!

Boxer Training – Exercising a Boxer – Providing sufficient physical activities is essential for any canine’s optimum health including your very own boxer puppy’s. Boxer dogs like a big backyard with lots of space to run around and express themselves. Daily walks are mandatory. If you cannot walk your dog every day consider hiring a dog walker or reconsider adopting a puppy at all. Lack of exercise can lead to many problems such as hyperactivity which leads to destruction of property. Learn how much exercise your puppy needs and how often they need to be exercised.

Exercise is the cornerstone of a happy and healthy boxer dog.

Boxer Training – Grooming a Boxer – Although boxer dogs don’t require too much grooming they still need their nails clipped, their coat brushed and checked for ticks/fleas, teeth inspected for cavities, and ears and nose inspected for unusual discharge. Your puppy is a playground for parasites so be ready to take necessary measures to clean his coat when necessary. When you go out with your dog I also recommend bug repellents specifically for dogs. Learn what grooming supplies you can invest into and what steps you need to take to keep your boxer puppy healthy.

Boxer Training – Mental Stimulation for a Boxer – Just like your puppy needs sufficient exercise for physical stimulation they also need mental stimulation to keep their minds working at all times. This means providing your little pooch with lots of toys and activities to engage in. Just like small children your boxer puppy wants to be active and release all the energy stored. Chew toys are a great way to keep your little puppy entertained for hours on end. Learn what other things you can do to keep them mentally stimulated.

Boxer Training – Boxer Obedience Training – Boxer obedience training is an ongoing process that never really stops. You need to maintain your position as the alpha dog and in order to do that you need to constantly reinforce your position by obedience training your boxer. Lack of obedience training will make your puppy dominant, aggressive, and destructive. Learn the proper ways to obedience train your boxer dog today.

Boxer Training – Boxer Aggression & Dominance – Your boxer may show signs of dominance and aggression if you don’t properly train them. When there is no definite ranks in your household and your boxer dog thinks he’s on top he will disobey your commands and expect you to listen to him. If you dare say or make him do something he doesn’t want to do he will growl at you because that’s what the “pack leader” would do if he was challenged by a pack member. If your dog is showing signs of dominance and aggression the chances are he thinks he’s the leader of the household. There are ways you can fix this but sometimes it’s recommended to hire a professional.

Boxer Training – Crate Training a Boxer – Crates are useful when transporting your puppy in a car or house training. Although I don’t condone crates for regular use, I do think they are useful to house train your boxer puppy. Traveling with a dog can be a nightmare so it’s important to get your puppy accustomed to a crate. They will feel more comfortable at the vet’s if they are in their very own crate. Learn how to properly crate train your boxer.

Boxer Training – Boxer Biting Habit – Boxers like to bite and nip on things around them. As we like to explore things with our hands your puppy learns about the surrounding environment by biting various things. Boxer puppies learn to control their bite force while playing with their littermates. When one littermate bites a bit too hard the other littermate will yelp and stop playing. This lets them know about how hard of a “bite” is too hard. Sometimes when a puppy is taken from its mother too early they never learn how to control their bites. Training your puppy not to bite too hard (and in some cases not to bite at all) is important to preserve yourself and your belongings.

Boxer Training – Boxer Chewing – Boxers enjoy a good chew. Keeps their minds stimulated and their teeth healthy. However, what if your boxer likes to chew on belongings that are very expensive to replace? Your coffee table, your couch, dangerous cables and wires, clothes, shoes, iPods, and other things? Chewing can quickly become a destructive behavior that needs to be addressed before it even starts! Learn how to properly train your boxer puppy to stop chewing on stuff you don’t want him to chew on.
